Draper’s Windmill, Margate, Kent

Draper’s Windmill in Margate is a lovely example of a Grade 2 listed smock Mill, built in 1845. It is the only remaining mill of a group of three mills which used to be found in the Margate area.

The total span of the magnificent sails is 66ft.

The Miller waiting to greet us, I didn’t catch his name!! Open-mouthed smile

Interesting artefacts in the Museum area.

As with many Mills, Draper’s Windmill almost disappeared, due to neglect, it was saved in 1965, when it was under threat of demolition, by the Draper’s Windmill Trust, who have worked hard over the last 50 years to preserve this lovely mill.

Old tools,

…and all sorts of levers and cogs Smile

I got my chance to visit the mill during the National Mill Weekend, which was held back in May. I had heard about the mill, but had never seen it. A quick look on the map showed me where to go, and the weather was just right for visiting a windmill. The mill is now surrounded by houses, but that does nor detract from its beauty.

The view from the first floor platform, or ‘stage’ looking over Margate to the sea.

Mill wheels.

I seem to have a preference these days to get high up in buildings, so this was a great place for me to visit. Unfortunately we were unable to climb right up into the cap, but it was lovely to get out onto the platform on the first floor.

Wonderful cogs Smile

Taken from the back of the mill, showing the fantail.

A mill cart, I don’t think it would have been this colour originally, but it makes a lovely colourful addition at the front of the mill.

The mill is open on Saturday afternoons during the summer, it is well worth a visit if you are in the Margate area, I certainly enjoyed my afternoon there Smile
